Link Text and Why It’s Important
In real estate there is three things that’s important: location, location, location. In search marketing it’s keywords keywords, keywords. Pick the right keywords for you site, write your content for the site (with those keywords in mind) and a flood of traffic will come to your way.
Well almost. You've got step one right, but step two is equally important. You need links into your site from quality sites, as designated by the Google search results for your keyword. And step, say 2 ½ is getting links into your site with the link text being your target keyword phrase.
Let me give you an example that will drive the point home from a recent event in the search marketing community.
A few mischievous search engine marketers got together and began putting links to the white house web page with the link text “Miserable Failure.” As Google crawled all the sites, these links made the keyword phrase rocket up the search results to #1 for the keyword "miserable failure." Check it out: miserable failure (though now Jimmy Carter is listed #2 for this keyword).
This is what is called “Google Bombing” and done from time-to-time to prove a point or just because it is fun to do.
My point is that links are important, but getting your keyword phrase in the link text of a link into your site is golden.
