Blogs and Podcasts – As a small business owner why you should care
Because you’re reading this blog you probably already have an understanding of the value of blogs and know why they can help your business. Podcasts are another matter, because they are fairly new and until the recent past, the stuff of the super geek set.
So maybe definitions and a clear explanation of the two are in order. What is a blog (the already initiated can skip on down)? The clearest explanation of a blog that I can come up with is this: A blog (short for Web Log), for a business, is an on-going exchange of ideas with its prospects and customers in a very cost effective way. If done right it is a valuable tool that the reader will come back to time and again because the information provided makes the reader’s business life easier and more successful. A blog should not be an overt sales tool for a company. It should be a trust information channel for the company’s customers and prospects. And the information provided can be recycled in a company newsletter or email e-zine.
Podcast is a combination of the words iPod and broadcast. Though you don’t necessarily need an iPod to listen to podcasts, they do make it more convenient. A podcast is nothing more than a recorded radio or audio program that someone can listen to anytime they want. Podcasts have really started to heat up with Apple’s inclusion of podcasts in their iTunes software program. You can get a podcast of almost any ABC News broadcast (in audio version only of course) or other offbeat programs in a dizzying assortment of subjects. So the veil of mystery has been lifted, podcasts are nothing more that audio files you can download – but just in a very easy way with iTunes or other podcast aggregators.
Why should you care, as a small business owner, about podcasts? Well depending on your business and your customer base, producing a podcast may not be right for you. But if you have a market of technically savvy and early adapter type people, a podcast could be a valuable tool to reach these them. Let me give you an example. Go Daddy one of the leading web hosting company in the business has Go Daddy radio where they produce a weekly radio program for its customers (and any one else that goes to their site) full of tips and information related to their business. Their customers are tech savvy and influential to a larger non-tech customer base. A podcast is a great way to evangelize them to influence the larger market these early adapter’s touch.
Both blogs and podcasts are revolutionizing the production and distribution of information. Any one with a computer, and Internet connection and an attitude can “publish” their view of the world for all to read or listen to. As a small business owner these two communication tools are something to consider.
