Know Your Keywords, Find Your Customers

As you start to promote your website, and your company on the Internet, knowing the top 10 to 25 keywords for your product category is the most important thing you can do for your small business, e-business success.

What are the top keywords your prospects are typing in at the search engines to find companies like yours? How many competitive pages are there for your top keywords? To find the all important answers to the above questions, you'll need to do some research. It will mainly just cost you time, but there are some paid resources worth using.

The major keyword search resource (that will cost you) is Wordtracker. Here you can find keywords in your product area and also, very importantly, how many competitive pages there are for your chosen keywords.

A really good free resource is Overture's keyword research tool. Though it doesn't give you competitive pages, it does provide keyword popularity numbers for the past month.

Once you know your keywords, the real work starts. You need to integrate them into your site and get the search engines to list your site under those keywords. More to come on that in future blogs.
